Carolina shag dancing is a slotted partner dance similar to swing. It's danced from the waist down, with intricate footwork and seemingly effortless turns and spins. It was invented in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina and is the SC state dance, however it is popular all over the Southeast. The Carolina shag is traditionally danced to classic “beach music” or Motown and blues but can be danced to many other types of music as well.

Practice
We enjoyed a great evening of conversation, fun and dancing at the Boat and Ski Club last night. Thirteen of us (intermediate to advanced) were there and we had the dance floor to ourselves. We practiced what we are learning in class, traded partners and learned a new shag step and a swing dance one too. The Club has invited us to use their dance floor for practice on Thursday nights. The floor is closed, so it is only us; no smoke; we took our own music and had a grand time. No membership is required, although we had several members with us. Hope you can join us next week! They are serving dinner, so you can grab something to eat there as well. We will continue to do this every Thursday until they have Christmas parties scheduled. Next week Stan and I plan to go about 6:30; eat and dance until about 9:30 or 10. We'd love to see you there. This is a great opportunity for someplace close to dance, let's support it, so we can keep it!

Shag Shoes
Shag requires shoes with a smooth sole so that you can glide and spin without sticking to the floor. Avoid rubber soles designed to keep you from slipping, that's what we want to do. Any leather sole shoe will do. Men, loafers sometimes have leather soles. They are not easy to find but they are out there.
Shoes specifically designed for shag, tango, salsa have suede soles that make it easy to spin, slide and glide. They have good support and are very light. They are expensive but make it much easier and more fun to dance. You can find shag shoes at several stores at North Myrtle Beach:
Judy's House of Oldies

The Shoe Center
http://www.shagshoes.com/
and other internet sites as well. Just search on shag shoes.
Alternatives to official shag shoes are available at your local dance stores like Lebos. You can get jazz, lyrical or square dance shoes with suede souls. Some are cheaper than shag shoes.
You can wear oxford type shoes, sandles, heels, or flats. I prefer a slight heel (not too high) it gives a better line to the body and a little more support, but any are fine. Whatever feels the best on you.
Until you are ready to buy shag shoes; I suggest a flat or low heel with a smoothish sole for women; dress shoes or loafers for men. Avoid flip flops (too floppy) and athletic shoes (too bulky.)
