Fall Migration SOS

We had a great time at SOS! Friday there was plenty of dancing and great music; some baking in the sun, reading and sleeping, wonderful food and some card playing! Saturday, Susan and Ben, Bernhardt, Janet and Rick Johnson and Jenny and Steve Jones took a class on Turns, and we saw some great turns Saturday evening at the OD Cafe; some even by our group. Janet and Rick also took a class in the Cha Cha and we look forward to hearing all about that! Lori and Perry Bernhardt danced the whole weekend, practicing diligently in the Condo, when not at the dance club. Judy and Lindsay Lohman stayed at the OD Resort so they wouldn't miss a thing. We caught a glimps of Joanna Parker one night but couldn't make our way to her. Hope we didn't miss anyone else. It's always a great pleasure for Stan and I to watch our students dance!
Saturday got a little crowded, but most hung in there and danced the night away! Watching other people dance is half the fun; and we enjoyed some great, not so great and always entertaining dancers.
We had our traditional breakfasts at Hoskins, convincing ourselves that the 1/2 mile walk used up all the calories from our big breakfast, and hopefully some from the seafood we ate the night before. The weather was absolutely gorgeous, particularly after having just gotten back from Alaska! Sorry, we forgot to take our camera, but we may have gotten one picture of part of the group on Steve's cell phone.
I can't tell you how much fun we had, the only thing that would have made it better is if you had been there! Hope that you plan to join us for Mid Winter, January 14 -17. Check out the Society of the Stranders website at http://www.shagdance.com/sosmidwinter.htm

Shag Shoes

Shag requires shoes with a smooth sole so that you can glide and spin without sticking to the floor. Avoid rubber soles designed to keep you from slipping, that's what we want to do. Any leather sole shoe will do. Men, loafers sometimes have leather soles. They are not easy to find but they are out there.

Shoes specifically designed for shag, tango, salsa have suede soles that make it easy to spin, slide and glide. They have good support and are very light. They are expensive but make it much easier and more fun to dance. You can find shag shoes at several stores at North Myrtle Beach:
Judy's House of Oldies

The Shoe Center
http://www.shagshoes.com/
and other internet sites as well. Just search on shag shoes.

Alternatives to official shag shoes are available at your local dance stores like Lebos. You can get jazz, lyrical or square dance shoes with suede souls. Some are cheaper than shag shoes.

You can wear oxford type shoes, sandles, heels, or flats. I prefer a slight heel (not too high) it gives a better line to the body and a little more support, but any are fine. Whatever feels the best on you.

Until you are ready to buy shag shoes; I suggest a flat or low heel with a smoothish sole for women; dress shoes or loafers for men. Avoid flip flops (too floppy) and athletic shoes (too bulky.)
